I've had a few fun experiences which reveal the characters have their own thing going on in the back of my mind.
One that sticks out happened when I was going through a rough patch. I had a vivid dream about a main character of a short story standing beside my bed. He gently put his hand on my arm and said, "Don't worry, I'm coming back home "
Next morning I checked my e-mail and the character's story had come back.
I have sleepwalked so I could have read the e-mail, mark it as read, then fallen asleep again and dreamed. It still makes a fun story.
